PURPOSES:

Researchers of the group of Studies on Antiquity come not just from the area of Classical Antiquity, but also from Pre-Classical Antiquity, as well as from Portuguese and Compared Literatures. This fact allows the group to work in two different areas: the study of Antiquity (taking into account cultural aspects, as well as the literary ones) and the study of its reflections and influences on European culture, particularly the Portuguese one, a work to be accomplished in several ways: translation of relevant texts, particularly those, that were never translated into Portuguese nor have accessible translations; studies concerning Antiquity and its influence.
As a first step to study the influence of Antiquity in Portuguese culture, this research group is preparing a study on Epicureanism, as well as an analysis of relevant questions in Portuguese culture in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as orientalism or the vision Portuguese had of Greece at that time.

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

The first research work to accomplish in the near future is a study on Epicureanism and its influence, mainly in Portuguese culture. This study shall be done in three phases: the study of Greek Epicureanism; the study of Roman Epicureanism; and the study of Epicurean reflections in European culture, particularly the Portuguese, collecting some of the most relevant texts, since, at least, Sá de Miranda, till the 20th century. The first phase is already in progress: the translation of Epicurus’ texts is almost done, so we can expect it to be published during the current year, with an introductory study by Alain Gigandet (University of Paris 12). As to the second part, we’ll begin the translation of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura this year, with the cooperation of Antonio Ruiz Castellanos (University of Cadiz). We expect to have this poem translated as well as an anthology of selected texts of other Roman authors (such as Cicero, Horatio, Virgil and Seneca) concerning epicurean doctrine in Rome, in the next three years. This part of the project, along with some research concerning the third phase were presented to FCT in Frebuary 2009, as an evaluation project (FCT: PTDC/FIL-FIL/103699/2008). For this project we have the cooperation of colleagues from other Portuguese Universities as well as from other research units.
As to the third part of the project, we hope to accomplish it after 2013, and for that we expect to have the cooperation of other colleagues.

Concerning the project Culture and Politics, the group is willing to analyse some aspects of 19th and 20th centuries, such as orientalism or the way Portuguese saw Greece at that time. In order to do so, we’ll study authors such as Almeida Garrett, Alexandre Herculano, Camilo Castelo Branco, Antero de Quental, Eça de Queirós, Teixeira de Pascoaes, José Régio, Fernando Pessoa, Vergílio Ferreira, Miguel Torga, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Natália Correia, Manuel Alegre or Herberto Hélder, whose texts show a clear influence of Classical Antiquity.

It is also one of our purposes an active participation in the central project of this unit (History and Historiography of culture and ideas), namely looking at the way how Antiquity, mainly Classical Antiquity, influenced Portuguese authors, such as Herculano, Oliveira Martins, Jaime Cortesão or António Sérgio.

RESULTS

The main achievements of this group are:
- The conference “Time and Temporalities – conceptions and calendars”, in November 2005;
- The cycle of conferences “Cultural Expressions of Hellenistic Antiquity”, March-May 2006;
- And the 6th International Congress of the Portuguese Association of Classical Studies “Identity and Citizenship – from the Antiquity to Our Times”, October 2006.

Accordingly, the issue nr. 23 of Cultura, ‘Ideia(s) de Tempo(s)’, concerns the publication of the papers of the conference “Time and Temporalities”. It's presentation, on October 17th 2007, was done by Raúl Miguel Rosado Fernandes.

On the other side, a significant part of the group researchers have translated into Portuguese a treatise of D. Jerónimo Osório, De Gloria, published in a bilingual edition (December 2006).

Finally, we need to point out the work of Maria Aparecida de Oliveira Silva, Plutarco e Roma: o mundo grego no Império, a PhD thesis presented at the S. Paulo University (Brazil) in September 2007, as the author was in September-October 2006, co oriented by one researcher of this group.
