.The research
conducted by the Free Seminar for the History of Ideas is focused on
Portuguese magazines of ideas and culture of the 20th century as its
study object.
The overall purpose of this research is threefold:
- the electronic and integral reedition of the chosen magazines (together
with a monographic study, descriptive fields and analyticals, prepared
using the Porbase criteria, and the reproduction of any relevant documentation);
- the study of the doctrine and the history of these periodicals and
the cultural and political movements which they helped to create and
consolidate;
- the preparation of databases, using the analyticals as a starting
point, that provide the necessary information for organizing dictionaries
of article authors, concepts, subjects, reception of authors and works,
both for each individual current of thought and for the whole of the
universe of magazines.
The work of research and edition has led to the creation of partnerships
with other institutions presenting similar objectives. Such is the case
of the permanent relationships with the National Library of Portugal
and the Foundation Mário Soares (the SLHI’s webpage in
the BNP portal and the Colecção de Revistas de Ideias
e Cultura, published by the Foundation Mário Soares are a result
of this). Another instance of this effort of collaboration can be found
in the support given by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to the publication
of the book Revistas, Ideias e Doutrinas – Leituras do Pensamento
Contemporâneo, and, together with the National Culture Centre,
to the DVD edition of O Tempo e o Modo.
RESEARCH IN PROGRESS
- Currently, the group is commited to the development of the
project POCI/HAR/60876/2004 (now PPCDT/HAR68076/2004), "Edition
of magazines of ideas and culture of the XXth century", evaluated
and funded by the FCT.
-
The group is currently now studying and preparing the electronic edition
of ten relevant magazines for the cultural and political history of
the XXth century: (A Águia, Nação Portuguesa,
Atlântida, Sol Nascente, Suplemento Literário e Artístico
de A Batalha, Estudos, Raiz e Utopia; Educação
Feminina, Revista de Educação Geral e Técnica).
-
Accordingly, three main aspects of the work shall be underlined:
- the elaboration and publishing of a data base concerning titles, authors,
concepts and authors as subject in cultural magazines (reproduction
of studies, elaboration of a thesausus and an analitic index unified,
gathering and publishing of documentation);
- Publishing of a thematic dictionary of the intellectual movements
studied;
Research, in collaboration with Brazilian scholars, of two Luso-Brazilian
magazines (Atlântica e Atlântico).
RESULTS
The activity
of the Free Seminar for the History of Ideas has developed on five separate
levels (which have yielded corresponding lines of achievements):
- debates, carried out in the course of four annual seminars, intended
to clarify theoretical questions regarding the doctrinarian movements
being studied, as well as technical issues resulting from the analysis
and indexation of the texts published in the magazines;
- organization and participation in scientific initiatives intended
for the study and debate of magazines of ideas and culture, along with
any related subjects;
- preparation of the electronic edition of the selected magazines and
publication of four of these titles;
- publication of several studies on the subject, including a collection
of conferences promoted by the Seminar, with the collaboration of highly
reputed specialists;
- perfecting the scientific and technical standards of the electronic
edition of magazines (in partnership with the National Library of Portugal,
the Foundation Mário Soares and the multimedia company Creatix).

editions
and studies:
Previous
and important note: The most significant expression of scientific productivity
of the research group is given by the edition of the selected magazines

– in electronic support. Since 2003, the Free Seminar for the
History of Ideas has published four magazines: two of them online, together
with the National Library of Portugal, and two others – one on
