PURPOSES:

The aim of the Hispanic Thought Project is the study of the history of Hispanic Thought currents from the 4th century to the present.
Special attention was given to the Luso-Brazilian thought and to the state of contemporary Spanish and Latin American thought, within a History of Ideas perspective.
The existing protocol between the CHC and the Instituto de Filosofia Luso-Brasileira [Institute of Luso-Brazilian Philosophy] is the ground to pursue the comparative study of Portuguese and Brazilian thought, both through single-author and thematic approaches, particularly as far as political, philosophical, juridical and aesthetical ideas are concerned.

.

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

At a collective level, the group actively collaborates with the Institute of Luso Brasilian Philosophy organizing the international conferences to be held in a biennial basis (under the denomination of Tobias Barreto in Portugal and Antero de Quental in Brazil).
The debate between our researchers and many of our partners on Luso-Brazilian philosophical and cultural studies is in progress. Therefore, a special issue of the journal Cultura on the Hispanic Culture and Thought will be organized in 2009.
The activity of the group will be oriented to a more coordinated project of the Centre on Culture and Politics. The axis of epistemological debate on history of ideas and cultural problematic and the problems related to culture and politics is a main purpose to the group activity between 2007 and 2010.
A relevant project of the group is the creation of a corpus of Ibero-American philosophy and history of ideas, in part to support the teaching of Hispanic Thought at the New University of Lisbon (the only one available on Spanish thought at the graduate level) but also to promote Ibero-American studies in Portugal.
The group is focusing on a more multidisplinar approach considering time, space and movement of ideas of Hispanic experience, being committed to have a wider perception of the Hispanic Thought with more attention to culture and to Cultural Studies. Culture as a subject strongly identifies the CHC as happened with the project Popular Piety, which ended its research programme. A broader cultural approach is being assumed now by this group namely considering the study of:
1) The study of “Hispanic cultural roads”, a research about Portuguese and Spanish literature concerning the subject. This is important as the well proven experience concerning the paths of Iberian theological and philosophical paradigms of Priscilianism that allows understanding Hispanic spirituality. This is a Project currently sponsored by CSIC (Camineria Hispanica http://www.aache.com/camineria/): Shared routes between Portugal and Spain: The nineteenth century literary journals (Caminhos partilhados entre Portugal e Espanha: as Revistas Literárias do Século XIX);
2) Social and political ideas in Spanish and Portuguese theatre at the second half of nineteenth century;
3) Culture and citizenship at Ibero-America;
4) Ideological and cultural debates of counterrevolution in Portugal and Spain.

RESULTS

- Based on a protocol between CHC [Centre for the History of Culture] and the Instituto de Filosofia Luso-Brasileira [Institute of Luso-Brazilian Philosophy] we have pursued the comparative study of Portuguese and Brazilian thought, both through single-author and thematic approaches.The two institutions organized the VIII International Colloquium Tobias Barreto hold in Portugal in 2004 under the theme Thought, Experience and Political Forms in Portugal and Brazil (XIX and XX centuries);
- The CHC co-organized the International Meeting Ortega Y Gasset realized at Evora University with the participation of researchers of the Group.
- An issue of the journal "Cultura" (nº14) was co-organized with the group "Books and reading" in 2003 (although the issue was from 2002), and another issue (nº20, 2005), was organized by this group.
- The results of the research on the field of Hispanic Thought can be evaluated by the production and participation at national and international scientific meetings. Among the researchers of this group, more than 30 books have been published during this period, more than 30 articles and chapters in international journals and books have been published (more than a hundred in national journals and books), more than 50 papers were presented in international conferences.
Three aspects of this work may be underlined:
a. The Comparative studies of philosophical and cultural problems;
b. The importance of studies concerning the history of political and legal ideas in Luso-Brazilian context;
c. The participation and publishing of papers at ibero-american editions.

- The scientific coordinator of the Group, with bibliographic support of the CHC, initiated the discipline of Contemporary Hispanic Thought (2004) at the Philosophy course.
- As far as the graduate formation is concerned, 19 PhD. and 15 M.A. thesis were discussed, during the period 2003-2006, by students whose work was followed by members of this group as supervisors or co-supervisors.

POPULAR PIETY

This project integrates the Portuguese-French project “Popular piety in Portugal bibliographic repertoire”, which has completed its basic research programme, covering the hole country, from Minho to the islands. However, it remains the subject of a two-goal research in CHC. On the one hand, one intends to prepare the publishing of the last two volumes, which comprehend the southern districts and the islands, meaning a further collection of the latest publications, not yet gathered in the repertoire. On the other hand, one also intends to update the portuguese database, already organized, to make it part of the popular culture aspect of the project “Iberian cross-cultural paths”.
