"Scribal
news" team (Évora, Jan. 2009) |

Meeting on XVIIth and XVIIIth century source edition (Dec. 2008,
FLL) |
| |
This project
seeks to understand the ways and the objects used to express and circulate
ideas.
It follows four basic lines of work:
1 - periodicals;
2 - printed iconography;
3 - Censorship and early printed books;
4 - GILL (Interdisciplinary cabinet of book and reading.
RESEARCH
IN PROGRESS
1 - Work on the periodical publications
is currently based on three protocols:
a) with CIDEHUS of the University of Évora dedicated to the study
of informative 18th century manuscripts (evaluation and funding FCT, PTDC/HAH/64759/2006,
" Scribal news: information and society (1729-1754)";
b) with CIDEHUS (Évora Univ.), with the Project "Dimensões
do Império Português: investigação sobre as
estruturas e dinâmicas do Antigo Sistema Colonial" (Brazil)
and with the Cátedra Jaime Cortesão of the São Paulo
University (CJC), in order to develop together a research project on "18th
century overseas news";
c) with the post graduation on Text editing and the masters course on
text studies, aims to put together teaching and research in this field.
Other works on eighteenth and nineteenth publications are being pursued
as well. One team member has currently a post-doctorate scholarship in
order to pursue his work on 19th century news.
2
- The line of work dedicated to the study of printed iconography is currently
in the process of taking an exhaustive inventory and classification of
all the iconography printed from the 17th century to the 19th centuries.
3
- One team member has currently a post-doctorate scholarship in order
to pursue her work on 18th century censorship. The edition of 16th century
portuguese books is also in progress;
4 - The GILL has been created in order to link the research made in this
field with other researchers of other institutions.
RESULTS
During the 2003-2006 period, the group
managed to accomplish most part of the objectives assumed. As far as
the iconography of the book were concerned, a special issue of the Centre
journal was published (2005) and a conference was organised (2006).
As far as the eighteenth century newsletters were concerned, the second
volume of the project was published (see indexes below), as well as
an "edition chart of principles" (see document) and a seminar
and two meetings were organized (2003 and 2005). As far as the 18th
and 19th century newspapers were concerned, apart from what was accomplished
regarding the newsletters, several books were published or republished.
Among those, we want to underline the book concerning the study of the
birth of the editorial line (José Alves), and an article on the
engravings of an eighteenth century newspaper, which connected this
line of work with the work on printed iconography. A special mention
is also due to a book on 17th and 18th century censorship (Teresa Paiã
Martins), which constitutes the main study on the subject published
till now. As for the work on 20th century journals, see the report concerning
this specific group.
Accordingly, the main achievements were the publication of nine books
and special issues of the Centre journal dedicated to the group subjects,
the organization of eleven conferences and seminars, among which we
want to underline those involving Professors Roger Chartier (in 2004),
Henri-Jean Martin and Jean-Dominique Mellot (in 2005) and a large number
of Portuguese specialists on modern text edition (in 2005).
